Order management without data assist?

I would like to have a page that will display the orders most current on top, when you click on the order number it would bring you to the detail page.

I tried this once before and if the order had four items there were four line for the same order on the first page and when you went to the details page it only had detail for one item.

I'm still learning PHP/MySQL if you can point me to any tutorials or examples that would be great.
