Expected end of statement with VB Script?

Expected end of statement with VB Script?

I have an ASP JavaScript template that uses a CSS menu no problem. I am trying to put the exact same menu in a ASP VB Script script page and it errors out saying :

Microsoft VBScript compilation error '800a0401'

Expected end of statement

/RiverOfGod/CSSMenuWriter/cssmw/menu.asp, line 2

var WA_localRoot = "/RiverOfGod/";
---------------------------------^

The first 3 lines of code for menu.asp are:

<%
var WA_localRoot = "/RiverOfGod/";
var WA_remoteRoot = "/";

Besides the language, the only other real difference in the pages is the VB script is using an external style sheet. But I can't figure out why either one of those would make a difference.

I don't really want to tinker with menu.asp since it works fine for the other pages. But I'm trying to switch over to the VB script, hence the different templates.

If it matters, you can see the working page at template.asp

and the one that errors out at templateExternalCSS.asp

I would really appreciate any help or insight. Thank you.
