Uneven Columns with CSS Sculptor

When I create most sites with two columns, I have a problem if the center/main column is larger than the side-bar. See uneven.html for an example from a site under development.

When I customized the design I clicked on even columns, but I am obviously missing something.

In other sites I have had this problem and have kludged a solution by inserting transparent .gifs at the end of short columns.

In just one case, www.criminaldefensesanfrancisco.com, the column are colored to the end of the page without any kludges.

I feel like that there must be some obvious that I'm missing... but I cannot find what it is!
