discount code of 25% applied to sub total

eCart 3
Coldfusion
Mac Dreamweaver CS3

Ecommerce site has been operating successful, now client would like to send email blast with discount code which the customer would enter at checkout. By entering the code they would receive 25% off the sub total of the order. Down the road the client may wish the discount be applied to one or two items. Would there be much to change? The shipping and handling are calculated by weight so that part would not be affected. I have noticed that Land's End does a similar thing but the code is automatic, perhaps unnecessary. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
