the faux column technique id really the only way to accomplish this.

But in using the faux column technique, your right and left border image will become part of the main content background image.

The faux column technique uses an image slice about 10 pixals that is of the entire width of your page, including the left and right borders, this is applied as a backround image to your main content area using the y-repeat.
