VBScript compilation error '800a0401'

I just downloaded CSS Menu writer and am trying it out for the first time but got an error right away. The error displayed on the browser page is:

Microsoft VBScript compilation error '800a0401'

Expected end of statement

/CSSMenuWriter/cssmw/menu.asp, line 2

var WA_localRoot = "/RiverOfGod/";
---------------------------------^

When I go to menu.asp lines 1-3 are:

<%
var WA_localRoot = "/RiverOfGod/";
var WA_remoteRoot = "/RiverOfGod/";

That info is the correct directories so I'm not sure what to do. I tried inserting the menu in a blank page, and it loads/works fine then. The dreamweaver page I'm inserting it into loads fine before the menu is inserted.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
Sally
