He is probably talking about making them both read-only since overwriting either would break the other.
Another technique is to store a backup of both connection files and then just try not to update them.. if you ever do then you'll get a connection error and you can quickly copy and paste the correct settings from your backup.
The readonly technique sounds maybe better since you don't have to worry about ever overwriting it by accident, but the second technique covers you if you do.
