Suggestions for storing advanced options of orders in database

I'm having a similar problem with PS2. I have created 2 test items (each with size and colour choices). I have also successfully submitted several test orders through Paypal express sandbox.
When I go into my orders I can see the item ordered is either test item 1 or test item 2 but there is no indication of what colour or size has been ordered. I notice this is the same in the PS3 demo. What do most merchant refer to when they are ready to fill the orders if not this page? am I missing something?
BTW these options are showing up just fine in the confirmation email.
My problem seems to be:
I don't think I can use the above fix (correct me if I am wrong) because the DetailName column in the orderdetails table in my database is not showing these options either (except in one order which I cannot figure out???) Unfortunately it was NOT the latest test order :-(
I am attaching the screenshot of this data. Databases give me a headache! Can anyone help me with this? thanks so much, Nancy
