How to set a Session Variable

I am 3 days in to using Security Assist, so be easy on me. I would like to set a "Session Variable" when the user logs in. Then allow access to restricted pages when the session variable is true (or equal to "1").

Currently when the user logs in, they are redirected to the "success" page. But when attempting to access protected pages (while logged in), access is denied. (The Server Behavior is set to restrict access based on the "pivisitors" rule).

My WA Rule is below:

<?php

function WA_Auth_GetComparisonsForRule($ruleName){
$comparisons = array();

switch ($ruleName){
case "Logged in to pivisitors":
$comparisons[0] = array(TRUE, "".((isset($_SESSION['sess_var']))?$_SESSION['sess_var']:"") ."", 1, "1");
break;
}
return $comparisons;
}

function WA_Auth_GetGroup($groupName){
$group = Array();

switch($groupName){

}

return $group;
}

?>

PS. Also, please advise how/when I can access the Solution Recipes (swf's). The links appear to be broken.

Thanks
