Fixed!
Although I'd looked at the HTML and gotten rid of formatting things from the vendor site, there were some of these in the first item in the list, which when removed cleared it all up... all those extra divs in the code below. sorry to take up space by fixing these things myself, but maybe others can get answers to similar oddities.
