2 quick questions

I find myself working in source view quite a bit when adding content via cms. The problem is that all the code is slammed together, making it difficult to keep track of where I need to be.
1. is there a way to force that code view to be in "line by line" layout rather than "no white space"(for lack of a better word)
2.if not, will I mess anything up by adding some comment lines?
