One option - albeit not ideal

Here is what I did so as to not spend the rest of my life trying to get our site working in all the browsers. I put the following line inside the <head> </head> tag

<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7" />

What this does is tells IE 8 to emulate IE 7 when displaying your page.

I know this is not ideal, but who has the 900 million years to spend on getting a webpage to look the same in IE 6, IE 7, IE 8, Safari, Firefox, Chrome.

Microsoft just doesn't get it. They are a great company but seriosly.

Hope this helps.

Terry
