The first thing to try would be to update the DataAssist Search server behavior to work with > and < values instead of equals. This should get it so there does not need to be an exact match.

You could also reformat the date in PHP with the strtotime and date functions. Give this a try first and see if it gets the results you are looking for. If you need to do some formatting I can help give you some pointers on that.
