New user needs help -Dreamweaver code

Please forgive the vague subject!

I just started with PS2 and I am using Dreamweaver CS4 (version 10) as my editor. I am just a very new beginner user to DW.

I have read through the FAQ and getting started guide and I think I understand most of it, allthough I need to do more reading about the WA globals file.

When I open index.php in design view the homepage/storefront does not display properly. I have searched a bit through the forums and found something about site definitions.

Basically when I view in design "the your store message" and most of the buttons above are displayed incorrectly and have php tags around them.

When viewing the code on many lines the <?php are all highlighted red. Is this indicating an error?

I am not sure if it is ok to post the code here or not, please advise.

All of my files are extracted to the root folder, and I have tried opening a few other php files in DW such as "contact us" etc and get the same result.

Thanks for any help, and please let me know if there is anything else I can post here to try and get me headed in the right direction!
