Try using the query object instead of the Recordset:

$BIG_SELECTS = new WA_MySQLi_Query($local_i);
$BIG_SELECTS->Statement = "SET SESSION SQL_BIG_SELECTS = 1";
$BIG_SELECTS->execute();
