Adding more then 1 database connection Error

I am trying to add a second database connection that will work at the same time as the primary. If I add it to additional connections, it wants to use one or the other depending on what domain you are on. If I add it as another dynamic connection, it shows file activity with a blank screen, and eventually times out. You can't view the tables, etc... just won't connect to that second DB.

Is there anyway to get it to take a secondary DB?

I am using another server that holds a bunch of content I want to retrieve, via search parameters. This database is on another server, and is not part of the main database for the application.
