mySQLi UPDATE nulls out fileField values

Here's the scenario: On an UPDATE page, I'm pulling a record from the mySQL database, and taking a file name value from that record, and populating it into the value="" on a fileField (for upload purposes). Two things are happening:

1) When a file is selected, the upload is successful (using Pure PHP Upload v3 code) - I can see the file on the server, though if the file has spaces in the filename, the upload inserts underscores - not a problem I guess, except that the UPDATE function does NOT take that value from them - it actually updates the filename field in the database with the true file name, complete with spaces.

2) If I do NOT select a new file to replace the old on on UPDATE, then the UPDATE form actually nulls out the fileField value, so it blanks out the file name in the database.
