image upload

I recently installed CMSBuilder on a site. When I try to upload an images I get a red X in the Preview Box and if I hit OK what I get on the webpage is the placeholder for the image. I thought this was because I was accessing the site via IP address instead of the domain name and had an issue with the path. But Then I went to a site that has had CMS installed and working for some time. When I tried to add an image to that site and I get the same thing. Then I clicked on an image already there. that did appear in the preview box. But when I tried to replace it I also got the red X in the preview box and a place holder where the previous image was. suggestions.
