Dreamweaver Database connection MySQL Error# 2000 - authentication

To work with DataAssist, I am trying to setup DreamweaverCS3 to connect to our removte database. I has worked before.

Using:
Dreamweaver CS3
XAMPP (with MySQL 5.0.10 - for local testing but not setup yet in Dreamweaver)
DataAssist

When connecting we get the error:
MySQL Error#: 2000
nysqulnd cannot connect to MySQL 4.1+ using the old insecure authentication. Please use an administarion tool to reset your password with the command SET PASSWORD = PASWWORD("your existing password.") This will store a new, and more secure, hash value inmysql.user. If this user is used in other scripts executed by PPH 5.2 or earlier you might need to remvoe the old-passwords flah from you my.cnf file

Please recomend how to setup. And/or if we should just connect to the local database unser the xampp directory and will that effect the coding?
