Adding manual authentication element to login page

Hi Jason.. OK I've followed the tutorial word for word (several times) .. so I'm not sure what I've done wrong. The registration works well.. it sends the confirmation to an admin email address for verification.. I click on the verify your email link, and it updates the database to a value of "1" for the 'emailVerified' column.
I can then click on the access restricted content, on the refreshed page, and it gets me to the login one more time.. after a successful login, I can click on the link and get into the site. The problem is every time I quit my browser, and login again it brings me to the user update.php page.

I have set the rules manager to use the VerifiedUser for the rule on the main index page.. help please..
