WA Double Opt-in demo

I've followed and applied this demo to my site.
(this is a great demo by the way http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBH2NpPUbaE&feature=youtu.be&hd=1)

I've incorporated an account expiry date which is set on the user-confirm page, at 1 year from the system date and is saved in the update procedure when the users verifies their email.

However, if the verification link is clicked repeatedly, the users expiry date field in the sql table is updated accordingly.

I want to trap or prevent this date updating by repeated use of the users verification email/ link.

I'm thinking along lines of a recordset checking the verified checkbox for presence of 1, where if present, won't trigger an update, but unsure how to tie this into the current update trigger as described by the demo i followed.

Any ideas please?

Thanks.
