I don't work for Webassist or anything - but it does work out of the box (at least, it did for me).
That error message that you got usually means that you have a "<php" or closing PHP tag with spaces or other characters right in front of it or right after it, which you can't. I'm guessing they'll have to see your php file to fix this.
This has happened to me before, and it's usually because I edited something or did something in Dreamweaver (even with, and especially, using their plugins) that added code where it wasn't supposed to. ie. I added a function through a webassist plugin or some other plugin, and it added the code right after an html tag or something, instead of placing it on a new line.
I don't know if any of that helps, but I'm sure webassist guys/gals will help.
