image Cache question

What is the image cache for?

I have 11,000 products where I have the larger sized image used on the product page, and I have the _thumb versions for results pages too. So, straight away I have 22,000 images to upload to the client's website. The webassist folder / plugins / catalog / scripts / image_cache / imagesupload / has three more folders in it each with what I can only assume to be extra copies of the images at the root level folder imagesupload.

Do I need these extra images in the image cache as I now have thousands upon thousands of images to download and reupload due to moving to a new server.

I didn't create these extra images, and I added the content to the database via an SQL insert statement, and it seems that some of my 11,000 images have got a image cache version, and some don't.

So what is the image cache for, and do I need to use the content within it? Can I ignore it?
