But I read nothing about my final question:
With the advanced options available in CSS3-HTML5, wouldn't it be sensible to have Menu Writer employ some kind of gradient and/or transparency style defs instead of resorting to image files?
I know it can be said that one might want to support older browsers, but that's no reason not to take advantage of what new browsers can do. (MW users can always opt to use a menu style that uses images.) It sure seems like a much more efficient way to handle a lot of the styling that is going on in creating a classy menu. And it seems reasonable to predict that adding a few such menu choices to Menu Writer would not be impossible, and, heck, it would make it more valuable.
Maybe this could be done as a custom "theme?" (Has anyone here tried that?)
Anyway, I remain curious.
