Login versus User Name

The powercms log in screen asks for Login.
The system does not store a username field.

The item that works for login seems to be an email address.

This really confuses my clients. In order to avoid their support calls, I would like to either:
1). Add a username field to the DB and have the login screen use that, OR
2). Change the login screen to read "Email address" so that it asks for what it really wants, OR
3). Be able to by-pass this level of authentication, since they have already logged into the system in a previous area. (Preferable). Which Session values could be used for that?

How should I accomplish these?

Thanks
