Accepting checks for payment

Accepting checks for payment

Many of the customers coming to battleoflakeerie-bicentennial.com are old-school and very reluctant to display any personal info online - so they send checks.
Question is…
How do I process these?
What I'm thinking of doing is effecting the sale myself using a coupon code for the exact amount of the check to zero out the total but I would still need to use (my) credit card data.
If I do that what happens? Does my credit get impacted in any way and would the process even be allowed?
I'm open to any and all suggestions.

I see that PayPal has an iPhone app to accept checks - could that be employed in some way?

Yours
Mick

What I really need to do is just record a sale without going through PayPal.
