Sub menu span

I have tried to adjust the width on the sub menu tabs with no luck. I am a novice in editing CSS, here are my steps, I go to ul#cssmw_home ul.level-1 > li > a, I open CSS editing window and adjust from there correct? If so, when I do this nothing changes, am I in the right area for the Sub-menus?

Also you mentioned CSS Menu Writer, would this cut down on width issues with main and sub menus no matter how many characters are in the menus? (Say 2-3 words max)?

Also can the Home page be modified via the wizards page type? At this point it will not allow me to change any of the layout for the Home page via page type.
I would like to add an image place holder on this page using one of the already developed page layout features.
Is this how this suppose to work?
Do I suppose modify this page via CSS?
Is there a work around this?

Page layout does work with with the other menus when I click on them.

You have been a great help.
