Submit: required field error messages not displaying

I used a preexisting form layout to start my form. Several of the fields in the form were required and had text error mesages that display if some part of the form is not filled in. I added several more fields that are required and while the checks are done and the field changes color, there is no text eroor message shown on the new fields.

I looked at the code that was generated to see where these error messages were held and duplicated the code in the line containing the text (with appropriate changes for the field names) but I still don't get any display of the error message when the field is not filled in.

Is there a behavior or something that also needs ot be set to get them to display?
