Invalid File Type

When iRite first came out - I added to one of my sites.
I recently went back to the site and tried to upload some small images and files

The site works fine locally
the remote FCK config seems fine

but when I try to upload an image on the remote server, I get...

"Invalid File Type"

ANY reason why I should be getting this on the server and NOT locally
File sizes are easily under the limit and of correct extension, with no strange characters in file names. Permissions are correct - running out of things the check

Could something have been changed on the server???
my supplier has changed some setting that have caused 'no tmp folder found' errors before

phpinfo says

php ver 4.4.9
open_basedir /home/(edited:myuserrefhere)/:/tmp:/usr/local/lib/php
