Insert Page - Capturing the ID and inserting it in another field

Insert Page - Capturing the ID and inserting it in another field

1: During an insert, the Database ID is captured in a Session Variable.
2: This variable is great for manipulating the names of files and images for that record, but I have a different problem.

What I want to do is insert that value into another field, called "sort". But during the insert, that session value has not been created yet. (when I create yet another record it remembers the value from the previous insert, not the new value)

How can I capture the ID of the record being inserted, then pass it into the "sort" column of my database?

Or - is there a better solution for capturing/inserting a "sort" value? The reason I want the "record ID" is because I know that will be unique - which is has to be.
