error connecting to db

I get "an unidentified error has occured" message when creating a db connection to use PowerCMS builder. I don't see how this could possibly connect to my database while using this in Dw from my local system.

I have "localhost" for the mysql server (I have tried putting the ip address here as well)
I have the username of the user for the database entered.
I have the password for my mysql database.
I have the database name entered.

This is not nearly as straightforward as using PowerCMS. I have already installed the beta build, and have deleted the dat file you always have people deleting. What next?
