Adding 'new' text after the link in the menu

Adding 'new' text after the link in the menu

I'm trying to add a piece of text that simply says 'new' and is displayed in red after a link in a sub-menu. I'm trying to make it clear that this menu item is new to the user. I've added css for this in menu.css and I've added HTML markup for it in menu.php. However, it never gets displayed. The only way I can get it to display is to include the word 'new' as part of the link, but then it gets formatted to match the style of the link and so isn't displayed in red.

Can anyone help with this?

[Update] I've just found the solution. I still had to include the 'new' text as part of the link, but wrapping it in a <span> tag within the link tag itself has now formatted the text correctly.
