Installing PowerCMS on a local server and setting up database

Installing PowerCMS on a local server and setting up database

Can and should I set up the PowerCMS locally first to sort out any problems. After reading through all these posts and I am having doubts that PowerCMS will work with DreamWeaver.

I am mac designer and have mamp installed and working.
I designed a site which is live and on a remote server now. I make updates on my local server before upload remotely. I would like to set up content areas for my client to update using cms.

Did I make a mistake because I first loaded the PowerCMS 2.11 to my local host first before setting up the database?

I have read through the Getting started and How to Import a MySQL.
Here is where I get confused, how to set updata base?
I am trying to do this locally using mamp
Do I need to copy the sql script and import? I am new to php and could not find the sql script containing an empty table, that I thought came with the Powercms?

thank you for any help
