Making a link to product_details page corresponding category

Ok i have some links on my homepage that link to the different categories that i have. The links work and all but when the user is taken to the product_details page all the products in that category show, which is how i want it.

My question is: How do i make it so when a user is taken to that particular category the accordian menu on left auto selects that particular category so that it is highlighted and the user can select the sub categories below it without having to click on the main category again... does that make sense?

Basically i want the link from homepage to product_details to also append the JS function that makes the accordian open for the corresponding category on product_details to see the sub categories automatically without having to select the category again.

how can this be done?
