Can I get the left column to stretch with the main content column?

Can I get the left column to stretch with the main content column?

Starting with one of the presets, I built the a two column layout, left sidebar with a fixed footer.

The left column has a beige background color but does not expand all the way down the page. I can adjust this by adding content of course, or simply entering carriage returns. I can also set a fixed height in pixels in the style sheet. I also tired setting the height in the style sheet to 100 % but that has no effect.

How can I get this column to always stretch to the bottom of the page and even connect to the footer? There always is some white space above the footer. here's a link
