PHP Site static to dynamic

Hi,
I installed and set up MAMP I defined a new site with the local root folder in Applications/MAMP/htdocs and the testing server Model as PHP MySQL.
I copied my html site into the htdocs. How do I now make all the pages PHP?
I already have this site made up with HTML and I am using a DWT template for all my inside pages and now I want to add some dynamic extensions like Search for boss and a Calendar.
I am confused how to use my template as PHP?
Can I turn my template into a PHP template? then copy all my HTML into it making it a PHP? Or do I make a blank PHP page and copy everything into that? (no longer using my template)?
I am not sure now how to copy the info most efficiently.
Also I am confused about setting up a database do I need one for Search for Boss or a Calendar?
I am on a mac OS 10.6.3
thanks
