One more network question

I've set MAMP on the mini to the default Apple ports 80 3306 and consequently a login is required which must be done at the mini.

First. Is it advisable to use 80 3306 or use the MAMP defaults which don't require a login or does it make any difference at all?

Second. If the first (80 3306) can I use a VNC to control the mini from my other machines?
Starting and logging in?

Third. If I should use a VNC and I'm uncomfortable with Apple's asking price for Apple Remote Desktop can you offer any insight into preferred open source or third party apps?
