Time Stamp for Image Name

Ok I have tried many things to get this to work and would like to know how to get it done correctly.

When adding images I am using a timestamp to name the image.

that works well - when I update an Image I would of course like to use the same name that has already been created - but when I do it appends .jpg to the end .

so for example I uplaod an image and its name becomes 1234567890.jpg

If I then update with another image - The result I get is 1234567890.jpg.jpg.

The reason I am going about it this way is so I do not have a whole buch of redundant images on the server....

Please let me know what I am doing wrong
