Several sites hacked - can I use newer version of PHP now?

Most sites are working with new CMS files but I had a problem with a few. It seems to be if they have a larger database but I'm not positive that is the problem. All the contenthistory table doesn't copy to the new database. I went through row by row for one site and deleted anything old. These are all municipal sites so they upload their agenda at least once/month and some sites are over 10 yrs old. I got nearly 1000 rows down to 100. Then I got everything to go and the site populated with all it's content. If the contenthistory table doesn't import all the rows, I get no content on the pages at all.

I tried using various options when exporting and importing but I'm not familiar with any of that so I was just guessing at what might help so I don't lose some data in the process. Any thoughts on how to get the last few to work? I went back to old system for 1 site and that is working for now but will have to try again. Tried going back on another site but still have database problem so that did not good and that site currently has not content on its pages and it's a larger village so they really need their content.

I'll keep trying here but any thoughts would be so welcome.

Thank you,
Laura
