Add to cart reduce productstock level

I would like to add functionality to my store where adding or removing an item to and from the cart automatically changes the stock level in my products table.

The store I am working on only sells one of a kind items, and I must prevent items from being added more than once.

I have already altered my record set to only show items if the product stock is not 0

Can anyone lead me to a reference where this code might be discussed?
