Repeat search with single changed value

I have a DataAssist search set up which is working great, but I'd like there to be an option to repeat the search with the option of changing a single value. I've half done this by storing fields as session variables on the results page, then reposting the search from a form using those session variables as hidden fields, offering the option that the person can change as a list.

However, one of the values I want to store as a session variable has more than one value. It's not simply 'AND category = x', but is 'AND category = x OR category = y OR category = z'. It comes from a checkbox group on the original search page.

How can I pass these values over as hidden fields when re-submitting the form without the user having to tick the boxes again?
