saving credit card data as a "payment method"

my client wants to save customers payment methods so that when the user returns the next time they can select to use the stored payment method. i havent ever stored the credit card data before and im wondering, how do i do this legally. I know that i would have to undergo PCI compliance, but doesnt anyone know the details of that? is it possible to do on a shared server? if not, would a vps work? or do we need to have our own server?

any guidance that you can suggest to lead me in the right direction to figure this out is greatly appreciated.
