It's not supported, so if it doesn't work, or causes other problems, we wont be able to help.  



If the code to do that is only in one or two places, I could look, but I was hoping to find out whether all the relevant code is in one place or scattered throughout the extension.

The actual implementation should be easy, but if it was hard with KFM, the modification might not be. I'm finding KCFinder is really easy to work with.
