Missing form buttons in IE8 compatibility mode

my clients site has a message board page enabling members to post news and info to other members.

Several members have complained that the reply button is missing when the message details page is displayed.

I have tracked this down to them using IE (IE8) in compatibility mode, (members are not tech savvy, and I would like to fix the issue rather than talk through changing browser settings if possible)

It looks like the buttons are cropped and moved over to the right of the screen, (image attached).

I'm sure I have come across this before, but can't remember what i did about it.
