Styling Dynamic Menu advice please

I have created a 3 level dynamic menu using CSS menu writer and would like to style it so that if a parent menu item has a child or children, then it is styled with an arrow or a plus sign accordingly.

I have done this with a static menu before, simply by adding the appropriate image to the stylesheet by default, and adding an inline style, such as style="background-image: none;" where no child is present.

Looking at menu.php created from the wizard, I thought the best way to approach this would be to check if the child recordset has any items, and style accordingly, but the recordset for the child items is run after the parent menu is styled.

I have tried moving the recordsets above the menu code but this causes me problems, can you advise on best way to achieve my objective ?
