WAMP or XAMPP?

Thread began 10/31/2009 10:57 am by neilo | Last modified 11/04/2009 4:20 pm by clickhappy392103 | 5898 views | 8 replies |

WAMP or XAMPP?

Not sure where to put this, Dreamweaver or PHP;

While I have everything set up fine on my current machine, I will have to set up a testing server on a new machine (Vista again).

Not too happy about the prospect of installing/configuring IIS, PHP, mySql, PEAR etc. so was considering using either XAMPP or WAMP as a testing environment.

Both look fairly straight forward, but just thought I'd check out here for preferences, recommendations, things to look out for etc.

Thanks.

How to set up a local testing server for Dreamweaver

I used WAMP until I discovered XAMPP and never went back.

XAMPP has a nice control panel that makes it very easy to manage everything.

uninstall wamp?

thanks for your post about this. I am very new so I think I may give that xampp a try. One question though, I already installed wamp..so do I have to uninstall that b4 installing xampp? I know you can only have 1 server running (I think), but as long as I don't have wamp turned on all should be okay , right? Or would you reccomend getting rid of it altogether?

If you already have WAMP working and you're happy with it, there is little reason to change. If you want to switch it would be better to uninstall and only run one of them. That way you don't have to worry about conflicting ports.

Ha, I wouldn't say that I had wamp working...not even close. I have been playing around with xampp and have more accomplished in 30 minutes that I could figure out in 2 weeks with wamp. Thank you so much for lighting the way.

Okay I have run into one little issue. Using the adobe walkthrough here setting_up_php_05.html
Everything went swimmingly until the end, when you click on the tables list in the database tab in dw. I can't get anything to show up. It just says none. I read some posts on the site about the same issue but I couldn't find a resolution. I followed all the example text naming exactly. I do have Norton on my pc, could that be the issue?
