upload image folder visibility

Hi Jason

Have just found out that if I navigate to the path of the image upload area i, the folder and the contents are visible to anyone - how do I stop that from happening please and stop unauthorised prying eyes from seeing the contents?

you would need to have the host disable directory listing on the server. you can also do this by creating an htaccess file if your using an Apache server:
disable-directory-listings/

thanks Jason.. wasnt sure if there was a setting within PCMS that I needed to toggle...

FTR, I created a .htaccess file using the following redirect:

RedirectMatch 301 ^/uploads/ www.domainname.co.uk

and placed it in the folder that I am looking to limit access to (eg /uploads)

well that doesnt work either... it doesnt allow for access to the file that has been uploaded....

is there a more elegant way than using IndexIgnore * which basically just shows this int he browser rather than the list of files: Index of /uploads/files

Disabling the index is the only option that i am familiar with.

have figured it out now...

created .htaccess with this in it:

Options -Indexes

place that in the folder that you are 'hiding'. This creates 'forbidden access'

Then create a 403 error and either point it to your 404 file or create a specific one for the 403

The folders are now 'invisible' (visitor just gets taken to the 404 or 403 page you create if they try to access the folders) but the files that are included in that folder can still be linked to (and subsequently downloaded if required)
