Confused Parent/Child

Thread began 12/10/2009 10:42 am by thebadger395923 | Last modified 12/10/2009 1:31 pm by Jason Byrnes | 1130 views | 1 replies |

Confused Parent/Child

I am trying to setup a DB for an automotive site:

I have Fuel, Gearbox, Type, Price and instock as my tables, but do not know/understand how to set up the DB for child

Do I: Fuel as parent: id_fuel, fuel
Gearbox as child: id_gearbox, id_fuel (Secondary key), gearbox
Type as child: id_type, id_fuel (Secondary key), type

and so on using fuel as the secondary key?

thanks in advance

Is fuel the parent of all of the tables: Gearbox, Type, Price and instock

If so, then yes, in each table create a foreign key relation to the fuel table.

you have to evaluate the parant / child relation on a per table basis. Fuel may not be the parent for all of your tables.

It is possible that in the Type table, the Gearbox may be the parent.

If that is the case, then the foreign key relation to create in the type table would point to the id_gearbox column of the gearbox table.
