Transparent PNG

I've set up an upload and just allowed the files to be uploaded as is no converting to jpg etc. The problem is that I'm uploading transparent png files and they get flattened so that the background is white. Is there a work around for this?

Also when a file is uploaded to the server and I want to replace it the server won't allow me to I've set the folder permissions to 777 so they should be able to be overwritten.

Any suggestions?
