IE 6 Menu not displaying

Thread began 11/11/2009 7:29 pm by ricksibay393512 | Last modified 11/16/2009 9:25 am by Eric Mittman | 5278 views | 9 replies |

IE 6 Menu not displaying

I am using cssmenuwriter 1.0.4 and have a basic drop-down menu, however, even though I have the conditional if/then statement and the correct header info, the menu still does not work on IE 6 (but works okay on all others). I have tried working with the script but nothing seems to work. It does not show any of the drop-downs.

Below is my IE 6 css (menu_ie.css).

Can someone help?

I think that I have gotten this to work a little better by adjusting some values in this style in your menu_ie.css:

ul#cssmw li span a {

Update the width to be 80px like this:
width: 80px;

I also commented out the padding and height like this:

/*padding: 10px 15px 6px 15px;*/
/*height: 20px;*/

When I did this it seemed to get it all onto a single line, but the level 2 menus were still not appearing. I think you will need to do some more adjusting of the css in order to get the submenus to appear the same. You may want to try adding in a z-index to the level 1 items to see if you can get them to show. Let us know if you have any further troubles with this.

No difference noticed

Thanks Eric for your attempt, but it shows no difference at all. The drop downs still don't show up and the boxes are all messed up looking in IE 6.

I have attached the CSS file again, if you could look at it again and, just to make sure I implemented your changes correctly, upload a revised version once you review it.

I'd really like to get this resolved ASAP.

Thanks,
Rick

When I view the page with the changes I made to the ie specific css it seems to look about the same as it does in FireFox. I'm including a copy of the css that I'm using and a screen shot of what I get when I test it for reference.

Also, I have done more testing on the dropdowns and I'm not able to get this part working at all. Was this every working in IE6? What has been customized or modified since it was working? If it was not working to begin with please describe the steps you took to implement this menu or include a preset for it so it can be tested.

Menu not working in IE6

Hi Eric,

Thanks for your quick response...

The menu NEVER worked in IE6. It was created in Dreamweaver using your extension, and therefore, the IE6 was originally from your extension.

The thing is, it never did work to begin with and that is why I have requested support.

Thanks,
Rick

What is the settings that you are using to create this menu within CSS Menu Writer? Some of the code on your pages does not seem very familiar to me so this is why I would like a reference for creating the menus in this way. If I can recreate your menus like this I will have a much better understanding of what is going on and will better be able to help you get it fixed. If you have a custom preset this would be very helpful, you can post back with a zip file if you have this.

Thanks...

Hi Eric,

Thanks for your help, but unfortunately, I don't have the time to keep waiting for a fix. The client really wanted a fix days ago. I've tried doing what I can with the CSS but nothing seemed to work. I even redid the menus with a new instance with your extention from scratch, and it still did not work.

What I have done now is a Javascript redirect - if the web visitor has IE 6, it redirects them to the exact duplicate of the website but without the drop-downs and just simple breadcrumbs instead. If they have anything BUT IE6, it keeps them on the same site with the drop-downs. Not the fanciest fix, but at least it works with IE6.

Ok, it sounds like that fix will work out ok for you. If you would like to investigate this further just post back with some more info about the preset and any steps you are taking to get the menu crafted and we can look into this more.
